Serpentine Pavilion 2021

Sumayya Vally / Counterspace · Kensington Gardens, London

Verified context and scale

Serpentine’s official exhibition page dates the pavilion to 11 June–17 October 2021. The design draws on London’s spaces of community, meeting and belonging, particularly those associated with diasporic communities. Its construction combines reclaimed steel, timber and cork with a micro-cement finish. The pale pink and brown tones and varied surface treatments are architectural references, not exposed monumental stone.

AECOM’s engineering account gives a footprint of approximately 350 m² and height above six metres, and describes the shallow base connecting landscape and gathering spaces. Those are the dimensional anchors for this interpretation. The model’s 10.55 m canopy radius and 6.3 m maximum height are selected approximations, not independently verified construction measurements.

Visitor route

The simulation provides ground-level approaches from the gallery side and the two park-path branches. Visitors can enter the central gathering space, move between the offset supports, explore the seating niches and leave for the lawn. Columns, low seating, café furniture and tree trunks block movement. The raised architectural fragments and roof are not walkable surfaces. A single level ground plane simplifies subtle base slopes and thresholds shown in the section.

The drawings and photographs establish public circulation through the open pavilion, but not every historical operational restriction or event configuration. This is an exploratory route informed by those references, not a certification of accessibility or a complete access survey.

Approximations and scope

Column outlines follow the plan’s grouping; individual heights, offsets, corbels, shallow ceiling beams and furniture profiles are approximated from images. Fluting, joints and surface variation are procedural. The curved roof aperture is represented by an offset infill creating a crescent-shaped slit; its exact curvature and size are estimated. The model preserves the contrast between sheltered, compressed passages and broad views into the park, without claiming a construction-accurate replica.

Surroundings include branching broadleaf trees, lawn, paths, benches, railings, lamps and a simplified Serpentine South exterior. Tree species and locations, gallery details and landscape distances are approximate. Off-site pavilion fragments and commissioned sound works are outside this walkthrough’s scope. Daylight controls are an illustrative lighting study, not historically calibrated weather, solar positions or opening hours.

Media

All distributed geometry, surface treatments and the thumbnail are original procedural output. Reference photographs, film frames, drawings and recordings are linked for research, not reproduced as exhibit assets. This is an independent interpretation.
