Cooking the World

Subodh Gupta · Casanova Gardens, Hotel Cipriani, Venice · 2022

Reference inspection

The official gallery identifies this presentation as 23 April–19 November 2022, with aluminium utensils, steel, cable, wood and kitchen appliances. It lists dimensions as variable. Its exterior, elevated garden and interior photographs establish a pitched roof, dense cookware covering, a raised floor, an end doorway and a long counter with wooden stools. Photos credited by the gallery to Agostino Osio–Alto Piano and Marco Valmarana were inspected as reference only.

The official project film and description establish the garden setting and functioning kitchen. The film was sampled, including food preparation at about 0:15 and occupied interior at about 0:46; it does not provide a measured tour. The organizer’s press release describes the inaugural-week cooking performance and communal intent.

Scale and route: verified versus estimated

No fixed Venice dimensions or complete access plan were found in the supplied documentation. The simulation estimates a 6 × 10 metre house, 3.5 metre eaves and a 5.2 metre ridge from people, doorway and counter proportions. Vessel count, individual arrangements, roof pitch and furniture dimensions are interpretations, not a survey.

The simulated visitor can circle the house, enter its front doorway over a low threshold, and follow the clear aisle alongside the stools to the far end, returning through the same opening. Vessel walls, counter, stools, trees and garden boundaries have collision. The public dining area is represented; the working kitchen is visible but not a playable cooking station. References show people inside but do not establish every historical visitor-access restriction. This route is a conservative approximation, not a claim that the installation was freely accessible at every date.

Venue and materials

The garden-facing hotel elevation follows the visible salmon stucco, pale trim, balconies, awnings and tiled roof. Lawn, branching trees, gravel paths, shrub borders, masonry walls and distant Venetian roof silhouettes provide context. Their positions and measurements are approximate; this is not a complete model of the hotel or Venice.

Original open-shell cookware geometry uses rolled rims, handles, mixed orientations and procedural wear. Reflectance approximates the sky, lawn and building colours rather than tracing every surrounding object. Lighting controls are illustrative, not calibrated solar positions or a record of evening opening hours. The environment does not reproduce a culinary performance, food smells or participants.

Media and authorship

All distributed geometry, materials and the preview image are original procedural output. No reference photographs, video frames, audio or scans are redistributed. Sources are linked for comparison. This independent interpretation is not an official digital replica.
