Arena for a Tree

After Klaus Littmann’s temporary installation on Münsterplatz, Basel, 27 April–6 June 2021. An independent procedural interpretation of the Basel presentation, not the later Zürich or Venice installations.

Verified features

The organizer documents a twelve-metre diameter, eight-metre height, treated spruce construction and a Persian ironwood tree (Parrotia persica), selected by Enzo Enea. The engineering practice describes seating for fifty people and an enclosure that allows views both inward and outward. Photographs show a rounded basket profile, horizontal timber lamellas, curved vertical ribs, a front stair and tiered circular seating.

Reference inspection

Modelled route and estimated dimensions

The model follows the published maximum diameter and height. Its radial profile, 23 ribs, 38 slat levels, timber sections, connections and exact entrance angle are visual approximations, not construction drawings. Three seating rings surround the tree bed. A six-step entrance reaches a low landing; two radial stair aisles connect the higher tiers. The simulated walking surfaces lie at approximately 1.05, 1.50 and 1.95 metres. These heights, the 1.8-metre entry width, bench depths and individual stair rises are estimated.

Visitors can circle the exterior, enter through the front stair, travel around the seating rings and ascend through the aisles. Benches, the tree bed and the supporting bowl block passage. The tree bed is treated as a protected area rather than a visitor floor. This follows the photographed spectator arrangement; a complete surveyed access plan and every original operational restriction were not available. The model does not claim wheelchair accessibility or reproduce access arrangements from other presentations.

Tree, setting and light

The tree uses original branching geometry, mottled bark and individually shaped spring leaves. Its species, approximate stature and multiple stems follow the references, but it is not a scan of the actual tree. The crown silhouette and branch positions are estimates.

The square includes cobbles, shuttered façades, dormers, tiled roofs, shade trees, benches, lamps and a simplified sandstone Basel Minster with twin spires, portals and rose-window tracery. Building locations, dimensions and fine architectural details are approximate. The model bounds the square and does not reconstruct neighbouring interiors or a complete street network.

Daylight casts geometric shadows through the slats. The night setting interprets the organizer’s photographs using warm lighting on the tree and timber; fixture photometry and solar positions are not calibrated. The slider is a light study and does not indicate historical opening hours.

Media

All geometry, surfaces and the thumbnail are original procedural output. No reference photographs, film frames, audio or downloaded scans are distributed. Linked photographs and film remain available for comparison with the original work.
